Crosby had a four-point night, while Malkin added two goals and an assist in a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild. It was a strong peformance by the line of Crosby-Malkin-Malone, netting three even strength goals, while the Pens added a power-play goal in their lone opportunity to do so, while killing off the two opportunities the Wild had. Crosby extended his point streak to 10 games, tying his career long, and the team extended its power-play goal scored streak to 11 games. (At least one PPG for in each game this season)

Tyler Kennedy made his NHL debut this night, replacing Gary Roberts in the lineup.
The Pens fell behind a third of the way into the first, 1-0, where Montreal scored after the Crosby-Malkin-Malone combination had held and cycled the puck in the Habs end for over a minute. Three and a half minutes later, the Habs scored on a powerplay just 11 seconds in, with Jordan Staal in the box for his first penalty of the season.
Montreal scored 0:49 into the 2nd to go up 3-0, and Sabourin replaced Fleury in the Pittsburgh net. Then the comeback was on - The Pens would claw back to send it to overtime, and then to a shootout. It was the shootout where the blackout occurred. It took the 16th skater to beat a goaltender, 8 for each team. Many shooters missed the net, but Montreal’s 8th and last beat Sabourin for the extra point.

In the rematch game from last Saturday, where the Pens picked up a 6-4 win, Toronto took control of a 1-1 tie game after two, scoring four straight goals to go up 5-1. Although the Pens got one more, Toronto held on for the win.
Talbot got hurt late in the first and did not return. Sidney Crosby exteded his point streak to 8 games, having scored in all but the first game this year.
Marc-Andre Fleury of the Penguins pitched his first shutout of the season, 1-0, over the visiting Rangers in the first of eight meetings this season. The Pens lone goal came on the powerplay in the 2nd, by Evgeni Malkin off of a sick pass from Ryan Whitney (Note to Versus: his name is not Brian), following a cross-ice pass from Sidney Crosby. That would be all they would need this night as they shut down Jaromir Jagr once again. Fleury stopped 36 shots, and was named number 1 star.
The Caps got out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first, as the Caps scored shortly after a powerplay expired. The Pens were caught with 3 D-men on the ice as Gonchar was just out of the box, and they were unable to clear the zone. Jordan Staal tied it at 1 early in the 2nd, just after a powerplay had expired. Ryan Whitney added a powerplay tally late in the 2nd to give the Pens a 2-1 lead.
The third period had long stretches of whistle-free play, and featured two fights, first Laraque with Donald Brashear, and the second with Jordan Staal and Matt Pettinger. The latter fight participants had to stay in the box more than 6 minutes extra due to lack of whistles - they finally got out with 2:34 to go.
The Pens fell behind early, tied it late in the 1st, then fell behind by 2 in the 2nd, only to storm back with two goals late in the 2nd period to tie. After a scoreless third period, the Pens went to their first overtime on the season.
Each of the Pens skaters, Sykora, EC, and Crosby, scored in the shootout. The first two Canes scored as well, with the 3rd Carolina skater failing to score, giving the Pens the extra point and the W, improving their record to 3-3-0-0 on the season.

Although the Pens scored first, their lapses in the 2nd period led them to a 3-1 deficit in an eventual 3-2 loss to Montreal at the Igloo.
The loss dropped the Pens record to 1-2-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) on the young season.
The Pens rebounded from their season opening loss at Carolina by defeating the defending Cup Champ Anaheim Ducks tonight by a score of 5-4. The Pens had goals by Petr Sykora (2), Colby Armstrong, Evgeni Malkin and Ryan Malone. Gary Roberts had two assists, and Malkin, Sykora, Sidney Crosby, Georges Laraque, Robert Scuderi and Erik Christensen each had assists.
The Pens opened the 2007-2008 season with two poor periods, falling behind 4-0 by the 2nd intermission. Only a late powerplay goal by Mark Recchi avoided the shutout, with the final score 4-1. Carolina had lost their opener on Wednesday to Montreal, and they clearly seemed to want it more. Cam Ward was sensational in goal - continuing the theory that the Pens seem to find a hot goaltender more often than most teams.
