Criminals On Your Doorstep

Channel 4 today reveals that bail hostels - halfway houses for parole prisoners and those on bail - are being set up in average houses in average UK streets by a company named Clearspring. These hostels are unsupervised, unlike government run ones, and no planning permission is needed for the company to purchase the properties and set up the hostels. Neighbours report anti-social behaviour of various kinds. If you happen to live in the UK, heres a basic list of where these places are:

Channel 4 News

There’s one in my city, Bath.

The trouble is, these places are needed urgently by the British prison system. Our prisons are at capacity and many who are incarcerated temporarily turn out to be innocent at trial. Others are perhaps reformed by their time in prison, such as one man who was featured on Channel 4’s news this evening.

I have to admit that if there was one on my street I would feel uneasy but these guys are probably no worse than your average neighbours. People will complain about over crowded prisons, but them become all NIMBY about solutions. Clearspring should make their plans public, but in the end we need bail hostels.

The Poetry of glenn: “The Yellow Rose”, 4.29.08-1

For once, I post a fresh work, never seen before…

The Yellow Rose

      A single yellow rose
to many, it is but a simple flower -
the forgotten cousin of the red rose
but its symbolism goes far deeper,
even these many years gone by
Simple, yet eloquent -
It speaks to the deeper bounds,
and the spontaneity of it all

   It may not seem much,
but that yellow rose fights on -
brings memories to the forefront,
relives them anew, as if freshly made,
    witnessed by a morning rose,
   the look of instant joy,
    contained, yet flowing, from
 a single yellow rose.

If Lovin’ You Is Wright, I Wanna Be Wrong

newyporkpost.jpg

Barack Obama’s ’spiritual mentor’ Rev. Jeremiah Wright held a press conference yesterday. The astonishing results can be found here. Some excerpts:

He griped that the government has never “confessed” to nor officially apologized for slavery - and he refused to back off his assertion that America invented the AIDS virus to kill black people.

“Based on what has happened to Africans in this country, I believe our government is capable of doing anything,” said Wright, who was provided bodyguards by Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam, according to The Washington Post.

I could easily talk about Rev. Wright’s comments, but they’re so insane and racist, why bother? What strikes me most about Rev. Wright is his facial expressions, the way he speaks (”"You cannot do terrorism on other people and expect it to never come back to you.”) and his hand gestures. He looks like a makeup-less clown.

Obama’s reaction will be to do nothing.

Today’s ‘Manimal’ Quote

manimal13.jpg

Dr. Jonathan Chase… wealthy, young, handsome. A man with the brightest of futures. A man with the darkest of pasts. From Africa’s deepest recesses, to the rarefied peaks of Tibet, heir to his father’s legacy and the world’s darkest mysteries. Jonathan Chase, master of the secrets that divide man from animal, animal from man… Manimal!

And that’s all I have to say.

Major victory in the fight against voter fraud

Today’s 6-3 Supreme Court decision, written by none other than Justice John Paul Stevens, clears the way for voter ID requirements to be put in force for the remainder of the 2008 election campaign.  First up is the Indiana primary, whose restrictions were upheld by the ruling in Crawford vs. Marion County Election Board.  Other states whose restrictions were in doubt will be free to proceed forward.  It is a major victory in the battle to erradicate voter fraud, and it is no surprise that the heavy opposition to it was from the Democrat party.

It should be noted that although the vote was 6-3, the opinions were split between Stevens, joined by Roberts and Kennedy, one by Scalia, joined by Thomas and Alito, that concurred in the judgment, and dissenting opinions from Souter, joined by Ginsberg, and a separate dissent by Breyer.  The basic difference between Stevens and Scalia is Stevens assumes some facts and bases result upon those, while Scalia thinks them irrelevant.

Del Toro to direct Hobbit

The news has finally been confirmed that the Devils Backbone, Hellboy and Pan’s Labrinth director will helm the two Hobbit films. Woohoo.

30 Hour Famine

As some of you may already know, my wife and I lead a very rambunctious group of 12-14 year old members of a Jr.High youth group at our church called GRAVITY. We’ve spent a lot of time recently getting them to think outside their busy lives and about their communities, their country and the world at large. We are about to embark on what we call “The Summer of Service” where every couple of weeks throughout the summer, we will be doing various service projects around town (food drives, toy drives, park cleanups, soup kitchens, etc). To kick off that summer of service, the kids are prepared to do something I’m really proud of.

World Vision is a Christian missions organization that works to feed hungry children around the world. They also sponsor something called the “30 Hour Famine” and we will be participating on May 24th-May 25th of this year. The kids in our youth group, as well as my wife and I, will be going without food (except juices or water) for 30 hours straight. We do this to 1) create awareness about hunger in our world today 2) experience a small part of the hunger that some children experience every day 3) raise money to send to World Vision that will be used to feed hungry children.

Those of you who know middle-schoolers… going without food is a big sacrifice, lol. It’s nowhere near the kind of hunger that the kids they’ll be helping experience, but they’ll get a taste and we’ll be playing games and doing other activities throughout the weekend fast that will educate them about some of these countries, the problems they face and open their eyes to the kind of help that is needed out there.

I’ll be honest, when I proposed the idea to them… I thought it’d be a bust. But lo and behold, we have an almost 100% participation of the regular kids in our group, as well as some new kids who came as invites when they heard about it. They can’t wait to do it, and are excited to know they are helping kids across the globe. If you have a church group of your own, I recommend telling your youth leaders about the website:  30hourfamine.org. They can find more info and do the famine as well.

That said… if any of you who I’ve known for a while would be interested in sponsoring my son or daughter (or both) with any amount from $1 to $whatever as they participate in the famine, give me an email… those who know me have it I think. It’s a one time donation amount of any amount you’re comfortable with. Don’t feel obligated, obviously… my kids are doing a pretty good job fundraising, but I thought I’d throw out the opportunity for any of my online friends if they felt led.

Most importantly, I think it’s a great organization and a great cause… and want to do what I can to create awareness out there of this really cool program that is getting kids in America to take a serious look at a serious problem… and do something about it. My prayer is that as they grow older, that concern for others will only grow stronger and stronger.

Thursday Male Morale Booster

Megan Fox Megan Fox of Transformers fame was today anointed Sexiest Woman in the World by the UK version of FHM Magazine. She edged Jessica Alba in second place and Keeley Hazell, Elisha Cuthbert and my personal favourite Scarlett Johansson into the next three places.

Lads mags’ lists like this are always in the news - Maxim was criticised last month for naming Sarah Jessica Parker the world’s least attractive lady - but personally I like them. It’s nice to know who it’s OK to be attracted to and although this list doesn’t contain my favourite buxom glamour girls, it does confirm that it’s OK to fancy Kirstie Allsopp (The Honourable). Also, saying ‘Megan Fox’, ‘Scarlett Johansson’ and ‘Keeley Hazell’ a lot might get us some new visitors.

In other news, the world is due to implode tomorrow.
