Film Review: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

IndyA legacy is a hard thing to maintain, especially one as revered as Indiana Jones. The original trilogy is one of the least criticised of recent cinematic history. Breathe a sigh of relief though, for Crystal Skull manages to keep this legacy intact, but it is sometimes deplorably silly and the plot descends into an odd mess by the end. Serious spoilers abound within. Continue reading ‘Film Review: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’

Congress loses 34 pages of Farm Bill, resulting in a do-over

This has to be the funniest story of incompetence in Congress this term. Both Democrat-controlled houses passed the 2008 Farm Bill, H.R. 2419, by margins high-enough to be veto-proof - i.e. greater than 2/3 in each house.

President Bush saw fit to veto the $290B spending bill yesterday, May 21, 2008, on pork and excess grounds. The House voted prompty to override the veto by a 316-108 tally. Today, it has come to light (via Kathryn Jean Lopez of NRO’s The Corner) that 34 pages of the bill - even more spending - were missing from the version of the bill that the President vetoed. As a result, Congress has to go back and repass the bill at its most basic level, meaning there is no way to get it done before the Memorial Day recess, and as a result, the old Farm Bill will expire before Congress reconvenes.

Obama Hits McCain

In Montana, Obama recently said,

“John McCain has decided to run for George Bush’s third term.”

And it looks like Obama has decided to run for Jimmy Carter’s third second term.

Ted Kennedy Has a Brain… Tumor.

This just in:

 http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080520/ap_on_go_co/kennedy

BOSTON - Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor. Doctors for the Massachusetts Democrat say tests conducted after Kennedy suffered a seizure this weekend show a tumor in his left parietal lobe. Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma, they said.

I’m no fan of Ted Kennedy, I think he’s a bloviating idiot — but I hope he pulls through. If he dies, then Obama will preside over the funeral, there will be this ‘mantle-passing’ nonsense, etc. We can’t have that, so please, pray for Mr. Kennedy and his family.

Methinks Obama doth protest too much

Obama’s reaction to Bush’s speech to the Knesset in honor of Israel’s 60th birthday is priceless.  Bush delivered this non-specific comment:

Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: “Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.” We have an obligation to call this what it is — the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.

Obama’s response makes it clear he took it personally, acting like a guilty man around a police officer who’s looking for someone else:

“It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 6Oth anniversary of Israel’s independence to launch a false political attack. It is time to turn the page on eight years of policies that have strengthened Iran and failed to secure America or our ally Israel. Instead of tough talk and no action, we need to do what Kennedy, Nixon and Reagan did and use all elements of American power — including tough, principled, and direct diplomacy - to pressure countries like Iran and Syria. George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the President’s extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel.”

Mr. Obama… don’t you know that speaking on the defensive like that only further illustrates your problems on Security and Terrorism issues? You would have been better served to keep your mouth shut.

Bush’s speech is a good one, and worth reading in full. He hits on a list of things that are common beliefs, many of which illustrate the importance of the Iraq theater of the GWOT without mentioning Iraq. This leads into an illustration of the current world conflict:

The fight against terror and extremism is the defining challenge of our time. It is more than a clash of arms. It is a clash of visions, a great ideological struggle. On the one side are those who defend the ideals of justice and dignity with the power of reason and truth. On the other side are those who pursue a narrow vision of cruelty and control by committing murder, inciting fear, and spreading lies.

This struggle is waged with the technology of the 21st century, but at its core it is an ancient battle between good and evil. The killers claim the mantle of Islam, but they are not religious men. No one who prays to the God of Abraham could strap a suicide vest to an innocent child, or blow up guiltless guests at a Passover Seder, or fly planes into office buildings filled with unsuspecting workers. In truth, the men who carry out these savage acts serve no higher goal than their own desire for power. They accept no God before themselves. And they reserve a special hatred for the most ardent defenders of liberty, including Americans and Israelis.

As much as people might deride Bush, it is clear that Bush gets it and Obama does not.

CNN: Only Racists Refuse to Vote Obama

Rubem Navaratte at CNN makes it clear; if you’re white and don’t vote for Obama, you’re a racist:

Meanwhile, some white Americans are turning themselves inside out to come up with excuses for why they’re not supporting Obama. It seems like just yesterday that these folks were arguing there is no racism in the immigration debate, and now they’re insisting there is no racism in the presidential election.
Some want to know why it isn’t racist when 70 percent of African-Americans vote for Obama but it is when 70 percent of whites vote against him.
The answer has to do with history. Over the decades, black Americans have had plenty of opportunities to vote for white people for president. And they have done so. But this is the first time that white Americans have a chance to vote for an African-American with a shot at the presidency. And what are they doing?
Many are responding quite well. Obama won the votes of many, to borrow a phrase, “hardworking white Americans,” in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming. But, elsewhere, as Obama said in a recent interview, people may need to get their head around the concept of an African-American even seeking the presidency, let alone winning it.

Also, the new Obama campaign poster is out:

As you can see, roses are blooming from Obama’s groinacological region, heaven shines upon him, and unicorns guard him.

This post’s Obama slogan is:

CHANGE YOU’D BE A RACIST NOT TO HOPE FOR. HOPE. BELIEVE. CHANGE. BELIEVE. BELIEVE.

Obama Had NO IDEA about Wright?

For those last few people who can still believe that Barack Obama had no idea that Rev. Wright’s views were so radical, here’s more evidence to the contrary, from The Weekly Standard:

Wright founded Trumpet Newsmagazine in 1982 as a “church newspaper”–primarily for his own congregation, one gathers–to “preach a message of social justice to those who might not hear it in worship service.” So Obama’s presence at sermons is not the only measure of his knowledge of Wright’s views. Glance through even a single issue of Trumpet, and Wright’s radical politics are everywhere–in the pictures, the headlines, the highlighted quotations, and above all in the articles themselves. It seems inconceivable that, in 20 years, Obama would never have picked up a copy of Trumpet. In fact, Obama himself graced the cover at least once (although efforts to obtain that issue from the publisher or Obama’s interview with the magazine from his campaign were unsuccessful).

Look carefully (click the image for a clearer image), and who do we see?

Obama… his spiritual mentor of two decades Rev. Wright and …. Louis Farrakhan!

Obama knew all about Wright and his racist, separatist beliefs for years, how could he not?

Bob Barr - Ron Paul by another name

Yesterday’s announcement by Bob Barr, the former Republican Congressman from Georgia, that he is running for President under the Libertarian banner ought to give John McCain pause. Barr’s conservatism is no secret. He was elected to the House in the Republican Revolution in 1994, and was one of the House managers in the Bill Clinton impeachment in 1998. He ran for the Senate in 2002, but did not secure the nomination. Barr is to the right of McCain on every issue save one: Iraq.

Unfortunately for Barr, that one issue will lose him more votes than he will gain. For all of McCain’s faults, his stance on the Iraq theater of the GWOT is not one of them. Barr’s other problem will be securing the Libertarian Party nomination - they have been openly courting Ron Paul, their 1988 nominee for President. Should he get it, a vote for him would be akin to a vote for the Democrat.

Should we PMOG?

If you use FireFox, here’s something interesting.

PMOG is a ‘Passively Multiplayer Online Game’ that requires a Firefox plug-in to play.

You earn points by visiting sites, and with the points you can buy traps, which you can leave for other PMOG players. The effect is that once another PMOGger visits a site, Firefox alerts him or her that a mine has gone off, etc.

So what do you guys think? I’m thinking of giving it a try.

Obama: The Truth is now Dirty Politics

As highlighted by WMAL’s Chris Plante this morning, Barack Obama has been endorsed by Hamas. John McCain had the nerve to speak the truth, in drawing a contrast between himself and Obama. When asked about McCain’s statement, about being endorsed by Hamas, Obama danced around the question, first expressing shock and outrage that McCain would play “dirty politics” when McCain said he wouldn’t play dirty.  Is the truth now Dirty?

Instead of answering the question, Mr. Obama proceeded to state he was against Hamas. Old political trick - answer a different question.  Victor Davis Hansen has the full Hamas quote here on The Corner.  McCain’s response to Obama’s claiming McCain was “losing his bearings” is here, courtesy of Andy McCarthy, as well as his analysis here.
