Star Trek and Iranians

The Iranian Ambassador to the UN was walking down the hallway and bumped into President Bush. Hoping to break the ice with an innocuous comment, the ambassador quickly said, “Respectfully, sir. I have a question about what I’ve seen in America.”

Politely, President Bush answered, “If I can help explain things to you, please let me know.”

The Iranian whispered. “My little girl watches this show called ‘Star Trek’ and in this show, there’s Chekov who is a Russian, Scotty who is Scottish, Sulu who is Chinese… but there aren’t any Iranians. Why aren’t there any Iranians on Star Trek?”.

President Bush whispered back to the ambassador, “It’s because Star Trek takes place in the future.”

Steele throws down the gauntlet…

Well, that didn’t take long.

Less than three weeks after Obama’s election, Michael Steele continues his full court press for the chairmanship of the RNC. Friday morning, he sat in as a guest host for Bill Bennett’s Morning in America radio program (I even passed up my usual routine of Grandy and Andy in the Morning on WMAL to listen in on WTNT). And from there, it appears he’s got his site up and running:

I personally have not signed up…yet. But I’m definitely thinking about it. Especially since he’s local. It’s not every day that a black man from PG County in Maryland declares himself a conservative, much less a Republican, and for 30 years, at that.

I don’t buy into the cries of tokenism that some call this move. Steele is doing this on his own, rather than playing “Mother-may-I?”. I think he, like many of us, knows that we have about 709 days to get things turned around for the party. I find that rather refreshing.

Film Review: Let The Right One In

I like very few vampire movies, but there are some I do like.  One of my favorites is The Lost Boys.

It had everything — humor, horror and an actual story with characters we would care for.

Let The Right One In is nothing like The Lost Boys, but it has a good story that is haunting to say the least.  It is slow, but you feel for two of the characters in it.

The new movie Twilight attempts to capture what Let The Right One In succeeds in.

Redemption: 24 is back

24 is back. Last night, Jack Bauer returned in 24: Redemption, a two-hour interlude between the 6th and 7th seasons, with the latter due to begin on Sunday, January 11, 2009. The full episode can be viewed here.

Basic review and minor spoilers below the fold.

See you on the streets….

It’s a brisk fall day as Krog and I  drive up the hill towards our destination, I bring up the matches we had a few days prior and what we could do differently if the girl who plays Blanka is there or that Japanese dude that spams the Shoryuken. As we park the car and head towards the doors I feel my anxiety rise…or is that my chi? Krog boasts about how he pummeled the guy playing Zangeif and how he was totally feeling his “Krojo” (that’s ‘mojo’ specifically owned and operated by Krogenar) after knocking the guy playing Guile off his win streak. The chill of the air and the light of the afternoon sun fade as the sounds of HADOKEN’s and “YOU WIN”s fill the stuffy air of the arcade.

Mikaeel Jackson

The American singer Michael Jackson has converted to Islam, the Sun newspaper reported over the weekend.

The 50-year-old pop star, who changed his name to Mikaeel, pledged allegiance to the Koran at a friend’s house in Los Angeles. An Imam was summoned from a nearby mosque to hold the shahada, the declaration of belief in Allah and Mohammed’s prophecy.

An associate said that Jackson chose his new name, which is the name of one of Allah’s angels, after rejecting another Muslim name, Mustafa, which means “the chosen one.”

Jimoney.

Jermaine has got to be feeling better about his name right now.

So what’s left for Mikaeel to become now? He’s been black, a man, a white woman, Japanese, a noseless pedophile and Peter Pan. I’m surprised he didn’t do this sooner. Is it just me or do some black celebrities ‘Go Islamic’ when their fortunes go south? Wesley Snipes turned into a black Egyptian weirdo ‘Nuabian’ - then there was Cassius Clay (now Muhammad Ali) and even Mike Tyson went crazy and got that stupid African tattoo on his face.

Wait, I just remembered white people have Tom Cruise and Scientology to explain. My bad.

McCain’s defeat is complete: McCain takes Missouri

The last unsettled state finally has a winner - and it is the loser, John S. McCain. Missouri had been considered a bellweather - It marks the just the second time since 1904 that Missouri has gone with the electoral college loser (the other being 1956). The finality of Missouri gives a final electoral tally of 365-173 in favor of Obama.

Star Trek Trailer

Here’s the latest trailer for JJ Abrams’ take on Star Trek. Looks badass.

Krog Ninja Edit:

Space Shuttle blasts off with little fanfare

Endeavour STS-126
The Space Shuttle Endeavour lifted off from Cape Canavral Friday evening with little fanfare or replay on the nightly news. (Though I suspect that at least CNN and FNC covered it live, I did not think of it at the time, and went looking for the launch later that evening) The mission is STS-126, an International Space Station assembly flight delivering a multi-purpose logistics module.

The launch was flawless. The NASA video link provides a transcript of the audio below the video. Also check out the Launch blog, which liveblogged the countdown and launch. There are only 9 more shuttle flights scheduled before the remaining orbiters are retired, scheduled to give way to the Aries series of rockets and the Orion capsule, together which comprise the Constellation program. (A nice video introduction to Constellation is here)

Outrageous Bio/Resume Comments

I’m in no mood to talk politics lately. As such, I’m declaring a ‘humor break’ — and compiling a list of the most ridiculous things anyone could ever put in their ‘About Me’ statement. Some of you may have noticed that Relantel ‘plays trombone sensuously’ or that ’small animals and children’ trust Javen implicitly.

All false.

Rel, (while having a powerful singing voice) probably couldn’t tune a kazoo, and I saw Javen get attacked by sparrows. None of that is necessarily true either, it was just something to say. I should have written something insightful or deep, but instead you got this post, so cope.

Here’s my list, so far:

  • renowned primal scream therapist
  • swedish rodeo clown
  • beloved by millions, and yet a dark mystery
  • able to ride a bicycle up steep inclines with unflagging speed
  • zymergy aficionado

aside: “I never get tired of using the word ‘aficionado’.”

  • can sit for hours in the tub and not ‘prune up’
  • invented lightning
  • masseuse to the stars!
  • master of the steel drums
  • veteran minimalist
  • winner of the Alaskan Lumberjack Competition — three years running!
  • Founder of The Adam Sandler Film Treasury
  • Filipino Slap Boxing Champion
  • Regis Philbin once told him to ‘calm his ass down’
  • Coined the term ‘blamestorming’
  • has never uttered, “my friends” - not once!

Well, I’m open to more ideas. So far mine revolve around ridiculous careers, skills, celebrities, accomplishments, inherent abilities or awkward group affiliations. Is there something I’m missing?
