Steele throws down the gauntlet…

Well, that didn’t take long.

Less than three weeks after Obama’s election, Michael Steele continues his full court press for the chairmanship of the RNC. Friday morning, he sat in as a guest host for Bill Bennett’s Morning in America radio program (I even passed up my usual routine of Grandy and Andy in the Morning on WMAL to listen in on WTNT). And from there, it appears he’s got his site up and running:

I personally have not signed up…yet. But I’m definitely thinking about it. Especially since he’s local. It’s not every day that a black man from PG County in Maryland declares himself a conservative, much less a Republican, and for 30 years, at that.

I don’t buy into the cries of tokenism that some call this move. Steele is doing this on his own, rather than playing “Mother-may-I?”. I think he, like many of us, knows that we have about 709 days to get things turned around for the party. I find that rather refreshing.

BC’s endorsement for President

Well, the day is finally here, but unlike some of us on this board, I have not really made an endorsement. After much discernment, I have made my choice. When I go to pull the (proverbial) lever today, I will be voting for…

Two words: EXPENDABLE. REDSHIRTS.

Well, breaking some silence here for some big news. As you can probably guess from the post title, there’s some new info from Paramount related to the new Star Trek film. If you go to TrekMovie.com, there’s two posts:

First, an exclusive interview with the writers, Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci.

Then, a compilation of stills from various sites (AICN, MTV, UGO, IGN and TrekMovie).

But this one is the one that gets me pumped, even though it’s sans Spock:

Spock, what do you mean were out of coffee?

Spock, what do you mean we're out of coffee?

It’s about freakin’ time!

From the Politico:

House Republicans go back on the floor Monday to talk gas prices

Forwards are evil (but you already knew that)…

This is more of a random musing rather than anything else. But I think that you all can commiserate on some level.

Fear not, nothing’s over until the Conventions close…

With the despair I’m seeing amongst the base on the results of just 6 total primaries and caucuses, along with the retirings of Rudy and FDT, Michael Reagan brings up this idea (from NewsMax):

“As a result, if the nomination gets thrown open in a brokered convention, the person who comes out of the struggle the winner will most likely be Newt Gingrich.

If I’m right, I’ll back him to the hilt. If I’m wrong, I’ll follow my dad’s lead and support the nominee no matter who he is.”

This idea brings Newt back into play. And why not? Unlike everyone else, he hasn’t been throwing his mug out there for everyone to see since January 2007. He did kick around the idea of jumping in by last fall, but with McCain, Romney, Giuliani, Huckabee, FDT, Tommy Thompson, Jerry Kilgore, Ron Paul and Alan Keyes already in the lineup, I guess Newt figured it was just too crowded and probably would do more harm than good.

Remember, just because a contender ”has” delegates doesn’t necessarily mean they “have” to vote for them. Just because John “I need to outrank my daddy” McCain is the GOP darling of the MSM right now doesn’t mean the Florida contingent feels the same way (and I would hope that they don’t).

THAT may have been the smartest strategy in the widest race in 50 years, after all.

Um, where is it?  Discuss.

And so it begins…

Results coming in from the first precincts in Iowa for the caucuses (heh…).

General media consensus is that Huckabee’s got the nod in Iowa, followed by Romney and FDT (after which, McCain, Rudy and Paul have equal shares of the vote, and Hunter doesn’t register at all), while it’s too close to call between Obama, Clinton and Edwards (only Richardson has any of the other votes on the Dems side, with Biden, Dodd, Gravel and Kucinich barely even registering).

CBS is the only one posting a full story right now.  Take a look at some of the comments.  How can people think that Huck is part of the supposed VRWC or the more popular Bush Family Evil Empire (BFEE)?  He was just saying a couple of weeks ago that he didn’t approve of the current administration’s conduct as of late!

So, that new set of LED Christmas lights is going to save the world, eh?

Yes, ’tis the Christmas season again, and everywhere, people are putting together wonderful displays of Christmas lights in, on and around their homes. Such traditional venues such as the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center and the National Christmas Tree here in Washington are also part of the usual display phenomenon.

Since my family has moved in with my father-in-law, we’ve been subjected to only receiving TV via the airwaves (for whatever reason, the man refuses to get cable, even when I offer to pay for it, but that’s for another time), so we have a very limited TV news diet. I forgot how much of an agenda the national broadcasts have, but it gets better:

The local NBC affiliate did a piece on this year’s edition of the Rockefeller Center tree, and they made a big to-do about the fact that it was a 75 foot Douglas Fir from somewhere in Connecticut, blah, blah, blah, and the major development of the tree being lit by 30,000 GE LEDs and powered by solar panels atop Rockefeller Center.

I though, “Hmm, that’s kinda cool. Different, but I can get behind the LEDs and solar power. Interesting experiment, for sure.” That was until I heard this from the anchor’s mouth:

“By using the 30,000 LEDs and the solar panels, this will reduce the amount of carbon emitted, which is a factor in GLOBAL WARMING.”

*vomit* Well, there went my appetite.

I’m really getting tired of this whole “LEDs, CFLs and solar panels will stop global warming” issue. Yes, climate change should be a concern, but not because of the whole human guilt factor. The climate on the planet is always changing, and if we’re not ready or careful, something bad WILL happen, but not as catastrophic as what people like AlGore are predicting.

35 years ago, the issue was global cooling. The next Ice Age would be soon upon us (some people say we’re overdue), and we were all screwed. How did we go from freezing our keesters off to drowning ourselves in the space of 15 years? I’m confused.

Archbishop of Sydney George Cardinal Pell hit the nail on the head when he called global warming a religion, because that’s what I see being touted here. If you don’t believe “the debate is over”, then you’re in the pocket of the corporations and that you want to kill us all. That couldn’t be further from the truth for many of us. I’ve been listening to a lot of Dennis Miller’s radio show lately, and he’s got a pragmatic view of things. He had the founder of Greenpeace on a few months back (oddly enough, the gentleman is no longer with the organization, surprise, surprise), and this gentleman said that the environmental movement has been hijacked by idiots that don’t understand the science behind everything, only that man is bad for the environment.

We CAN be good stewards of the Earth, and should try to be. Stuff like recycling, driving hybrids and utilizing CFLs are just feel-good tactics, but investing in LEDs, compost piles and alternate fuel sources tend to be more prudent, because they do tend to produce better results. Plus, I think a lot of these alarmists don’t realize how resilient the Earth tends to be, especially when reclaiming previously developed areas. I saw a lot of stuff like that when I was a kid. That’s an ignorant and rather foolish assumption to take. The planet’s been here well before we came along, and it’ll still be here once we’re gone.

So, the next time you decide to do something that’s beneficial to the environment, don’t go spouting propaganda just to make yourself feel good. Just go with the flow and know that you’ve done your part.
