SuperBowls, Green Police and Samurai
Despite the Jets being knocked out of the SuperBowl this year, I did watch the game. Having absolutely nothing at stake in the game, my family split along predictable lines. My mother sided with the Colts because one of the commentators is the father of the Colt's quarterback.
As an agent of chaos, I tend to side with the underdog -- the Saints. Who, incidentally, won the game. (Chaos 1, World 0)
The game was great, but some commercials jumped out at me. The two best appear after the jump.
I love the fact that Audi is willing to lampoon all the 'green' stupidity, but wouldn't it have been better for the maker of HumVee's to have made this commercial instead? So what's the message, aside from it all being very funny? Are we to think, "Hey, if I own the new Audi 'green car' it's like a politburo ID card -- eco-roadblocks are for the proletariat, not high-ranking Soviets like me!"
As good as this commercial may be, it would have been better if the jack-booted eco-SS were run off the road by a gas-guzzling roadster instead. That would have pushed this commercial from 'very funny' to 'godlike'.
How exactly do you mock the Church of Global Warming on one hand, and with the other make a 'green' car? It's a stupid fad, but hey, buy our faddish car and make your life easier. Weird, weird message. Funny commercial, however.
Also, notice the eco-KGB agent at the end of the ad, the one in the roadblack, is using an aardvark as a police dog. Nice touch. Are aardvarks somehow more eco-friendly?
And now for the best commercial of the evening.
I have long maintained that adding a samurai to anything (shaving, bumper cars, G8 summits, bikini contests) makes it instantly great.

I thought the Audi commecial
I thought the Audi commecial was brilliant in illustrating the absurdity of the greens. (The whole Rush concept...illustrate absurdity by being absurd)

The Audi was great
But it was strange that they were advertising a product that was abiding green absurdity. They mock the standard, and rightly so, but then create a product in accordance with it at the same time. It sends conflicting signals.
Still, it was hilarious. :D
Doritos Warrior
And the Doritos commercial was just great... no conflicting messages at all. It simply states that if you steal someone's Doritos... they will dress up as a samurai and slay you.
Someone has pointed out to me that the khaki-shorted gestapo member in the Audi commercial had an ant eater on a leash, not an aardvark. I admit to hardly even knowing the difference. It still seems to me somehow pathetic that Audi could only mock the Church of Global Warming in the context of selling an environmentally 'friendly' car.
I think they may have been after people who generally agree with the concept of treading gently on the environment, but don't support waterboarding people who don't recycle.
