Negotiations Underway!

I’m currently negotiating with a video gaming industry expert, on becoming a permanent staff member here at BuriedPlanet — if successful, I be bringing over a huge amount of new gaming-related content.

Take that hockey tag!

New Theme — minus the womany pink font.

Ok, I’m sorry for the sudden change, but — isn’t this nice?!

Comments, please.

I plan on making the columns a bit wider, and some other cosmetic changes, but later.

Update: I’ve added some security to cut down on the rash of bogus user registrations coming in from unsavory spammer-ridden places like former Soviet republics, Singapore, and ‘Will’s Free Swim’. (Apologies to Singapore and those former Soviet republics.) If you’re a registered user you may have to put in the magical word once, and then you shouldn’t have to bother with it again. I’ve also installed a plug-in called ‘Akismet’ which is supposed to kill spammers on site.

I Done Broke WordPress.

Yep, I upgraded to WordPress v2.3.2 (for security reasons) and the K2 theme (which I was loving) stopped working. :(

In the meantime, I will be playing around with this theme — modified already with the background I made in Photoshop.

I kind of like it! But I … I realize the text is rather womany and pink. I know this, and I’m working on changing the font to something more ‘Arthur Fonzarelli’, so hang on. :)

Aged to Perfection: Big K hits Big 34.

tryst3-baby.jpg It’s my birthday today.

34 and still unencumbered with a wife or family. But I’m still in a good mood, generally.

Just as a reminder, don’t ever combine the following words in a google search: old man, bikini babe — I tried in an attempt to find a suitable picture, but it didn’t work out well.

And so, here are some birthday related sites I rounded up for the occassion:

http://www.dayofbirth.co.uk/

http://www.on-this-day.com/

http://www.someecards.com/

I don’t know why these sorts of facts about birthdays are supposed to be interesting. Truman Capote was born on my birthday (he wasn’t), but wow, that would be … fascinating, huh? On the other hand, it was on today’s date, back in 2000, that Al Gore finally conceded that he had lost the presidency, after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the excessive recounting ordered by the Florida Supreme Court was unconstitutional. Tough luck, Al.

Also, I was born on a Thursday. (I was hoping for a Friday.);

That last link, however, is a great site — someone finally got around to mocking e-cards. Here’s an example of one:

How do I feel about turning 34? I suppose it’s better than the alternative. :)

“Hold on to your potatoes!” WordPress v2.3.1 Upgrade

potatoes4.jpg

Yep, I’m working on the upgrade tonight, seeing as I have tomorrow (my birthday) off from work. If it screw it up royally I’ll have tomorrow to try to fix. So do as the post title suggests. I’m not saying ‘get gay’ with some potatoes, just hold on in case I break the blog. I honestly intended on putting up a picture of ‘Short Round’ from ‘The Temple of Doom’, but none of them were good. Finally, I just googled potatoes, and then found that there’s a band named, ‘The Gay Potatoes’ and it made my day a little bit brighter.

I should really get started on the upgrade.

Ok, you can let go of your potatoes.

Next up, getting tags to work the way I want.

BuriedPlanet Upgrade

There’s now a quoting feature in the comments section which allow you to quote either the previous comment, or select and then quote any text that appears on the page. Also, author pages look slightly different as I fiddle with the code.

Feed back on the quoting feature is welcome. Or, just use it! :)

Edit: Would this quote plugin be better for us? I found the yellow boxes a little annoying, but it seemed a bit more intuitive.

buriedplanet.com e-mail addresses for authors

If any of our current authors wants an account, just send me an email with the format ( yourname at buriedplanet.com) and what password you would prefer. I’m working on author pages that will display biographies, a photos, and an author archive of previous posts.

PDT … R.I.P. (2003-2007)

ejectpdt.jpg

PleaseDriveThrough.com’s doors have finally been shuttered and it was a fun 4.75 years.

Kope and I originally started the forum when we found ourselves getting into some very interesting political commentary over at ‘The Galactic Senate’ - a StarWars forum. The admins were getting a bit worried at all the political talk, and we couldn’t blame them — it’s a StarWars forum after all, not ‘Firing Line’. So Kope brought his forum-building skills to bear, and I (with a firm grip on his coat-tail) came along for the ride.

Along with us came Javen, Marbleman, Einstein, Isamu and more. We got Sue to join us, and then Rel came along. Then there was Blue Morpho, Beefcake and UnsungHero. And then there was that guy who was into obscure Russian cinema whose name I cannot recall. And to that guy who’s name starts with a ‘Y’ and I suspect is vaguely Asian, well, you know who you are.

If I’ve forgotten anyone (and I surely must have), I’m really, really sorry you didn’t make a larger impression.

Some memories … Mystery Theater, Halloween Avatars, Santa Krog letting PDTers submit wish lists (that was a busy year for Ms. Lohan), trading holiday avatars (I still have that one Kope made me, with Santa sitting in front of a computer, listing people’s names and the gifts they would receive.)

Alec Baldwin … coal.
Bill Clinton … coal.
Krogenar … $$$$

That was a lot of fun. But the forum had become kind of slow as of late (though we had been through rough patches before) and I think it was probably time for us to move to a venue that was more suited to our size. Take it from me, living as a bachelor in a ‘Wayne Manor’ style home is great and all, but it kind of gets echo-y and lonely. In a similar way, I think a forum might be too large and unwieldy a home for us. I think a multi-author blog would be Goldilocks for us … just right. Whatever content we have would be tightly packed and easily searchable — complete with RSS feeds! Also, a blog should be easier to administrate than a forum, and easier to skin as well.

So here we are at BuriedPlanet.com, and I hope every PDTer visits regularly, and posts when the moods strikes you. My goal here is to create a place where all of us can post at a leisurely pace about whatever concerns us, and keep in touch. As with any new project I start, the problem is not getting ideas, it’s not getting bogged down in them. So for now, the forum theme will stay as it is, until I develop a new theme. My first order of business will be changing some of the code so that we’ll have ‘author’ pages complete with profiles. So when someone clicks on BuckyMcClachlan’s link, they get a listing of, say, his five most recent posts, and maybe a category cloud of what Bucky blogs about. A photo and bio would be available also. I’d want RSS feeds also, for each individual author.

Also, veteran PDTers (that would be all of you, pretty much!) are welcome to become BuriedPlanet.com authors, just let me or Rel know. I want BuriedPlanet to be open and flexible when it comes to content, so please, post away. Feel free to share some PDT moments that you remember in the comments section, along with any ideas or suggestions you might have for BuriedPlanet.

Cheers,

-K.

YouTube Videos, etc. — how to embed.

To the authors here’s a quick guide on how to embed videos from YouTube, iFilm, wherever. When editing, click on the little ‘A’ symbol on the WYSIWYG editor. Here’s a screencap:
