Giants end Pats 19-0 dream, as Pats become first 18-1 team not to win the SB in 17-14 loss

19-019-0
In what has to be right up there with the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history, the Giants erased 4th quarter deficits of 7-3 and 14-10 en route to a 17-14 win over the previously unbeaten New England Patriots. For what the first three quarters lacked, the 4th quarter made up for it in excitement, featuring long drives under pressure from Eli Manning, then Tom Brady, then Eli Manning again, leaving Tom Brady 35 seconds and 3 timeouts to drive into field goal range for a chance to tie it. Unfortunately for New England, their deep throws on 1st, 3rd and 4th downs were covered, and Brady was sacked by rookie Jay Alford out of Penn State.

The Lombardi trophy was presented by former Redskin Doug Williams, MVP of Super Bowl 22. Eli Manning was named MVP.

Not only did the Giants win, poor sport Bill Belichek left the field before the final play, failing to give the customary handshake. Some class. He was, however, gracious, though subdued, in his postgame interview.

Captain Ed liveblogged the game over on Captain’s Quarters. Worth a read.

Oh, and Krog - you can celebrate now - New York has a new champion! (First non-Yankees since the 1994 Rangers won the Stanley Cup)

EDIT - and you too could have had your copy of 19-0 on Amazon - announced before the game.

BCS in Chaos - #1 and #2 lose on last day of regular season

Missouri and West Virginia entered the final weekend of the College Football regular season in the top two slots in the BCS, with all they had to do was win and they would play for the National title.

West Virginia hosted Pittsburgh in the 100th edition of the “Backyard Brawl”. WVU was a 28 point favorite, but found themselves down 13-7 with 2 minutes left, and could not convert late on a 4th and 17 from the Pitt 27 yard line. Pitt took an intentional safety, for a final score of 13-9. It marked the 13th time this season that a top-5 team lost to an unranked team.

In the Big 12 title game, Missouri trailed Oklahoma, whom they had already lost to for their only prior loss this season, 21-14 late in the 3rd quarter, with Missouri QB Daniels throwing a pass that was tipped and picked off by Oklahoma and returned to the 6 yard line. A few plays later, it was 28-14. Oklahoma would win 38-17.

The 3rd, 4th and 5th ranked teams, Ohio State (11-1), Georgia (10-2) and Kansas (11-1, with its first loss coming at the hands of Missouri last week, denying them a spot in the Big 12 title game) stand to gain from the chaos in front of them. #7 LSU won the SEC title game 21-14 over Tennessee, finishing 11-2, with both losses coming in triple overtime. LSU may well jump Georgia and Kansas. The lone undefeated, Hawaii, came back from a 21-0 deficit to beat Washington 35-28 late, yet it seems almost assured that they will be shut out of the BCS title game.

Monday Night Football found its way into the record-books tonight, with the host Steelers emerging with a 3-0 shutout win on a very poor, rain-slogged field over the winless Miami Dolphins. It took a Jeff Reed field goal from 24 yards out with 17 seconds left in regulation to secure the win.

Not only was the game the lowest total score in MNF history (prior record was Sept. 2006, a 9-0 win by the Jaguars at home over the Steelers), it marked the 13th straight MNF game won at home by the Steelers (a record), and was the longest scoreless game since November 1943, when the Giants and Lions played to a scoreless tie.

The field had been replaced starting Saturday afternoon, after 4 high school playoff games on Friday, and the USF-Pitt game on Saturday. That process of new sod was compounded by a day and a half of rain, which forced the start of the game to be delayed a half hour.

Duke case all over again?

The occasion of an October 9th “fight” at Penn State finds the prosecutors committing the same faux pas as the prosecutor in the Duke rape case - they only showed photos of players to the “victim” and witnesses:

The investigation took several weeks as police reviewed video surveillence and interviewed witnesses. Capehart and other witnesses were asked to identify suspects by looking at a Penn State football program.

One of those Wow games - Steelers beat Browns 31-28

With apologies to Kope, this was one of those games. First place in the AFC North was on the line, and for a time, it looked like the Browns were going to forge a 1st place tie, but then the 2nd half had to be played…

Mid-Season - can the Pats complete the perfect season?

The New England Patriots have seared through the competition, finding themselves with a 9-0 record at their bye week, with 7 games left: at Buffalo (4-4), vs. Philadelphia (3-5), at Baltimore (4-4), vs Pittsburgh (6-2), vs. Jets (1-8), vs Miami (0-8), and at Giants (6-2).

How likely is it they can run the table?

Joey Porter cut by Steelers

In what was surely a cost-cutting move, the Steelers cut Linebacker Joey Porter on Thursday. Porter was the heart and soul of the defense, and had been with the team for 8 seasons.

It has been speculated elsewhere that Porter was a casualty of Bill Cowher’s retirement.

Also cut were Verron Haynes, a 3rd down running back.

The surprise move was the tender offer of 3rd string Quarterback Brian St. Pierre.

PSU can’t crack the coaches… 1 vote short this week

PSU crushed 1-AA Youngstown State on Saturday, 37-3, in a fill-in game after 1-A Louisiana Tech backed out at the last minute (last Spring) due to a scheduling conflict. YSU gave them some fits in the passing game, but PSU found a running game, rushing for near 400 yards. The game was scoreless after the 1st Quarter, but saw PSU score 20 in the 2nd quarter and 10 more in the third, before their backup quarterback tacked on the last 7 late in the 4th quarter on a run.

PSU was 25 in the AP last week, and moved up to 24 this week, ahead of Boise State as the new 25. The Coaches, as the USAToday poll (ESPN pulled its association and now uses the AP in its broadcasts), saw PSU as the first in the list of others receiving votes after the loss at Notre Dame. This week finds them in the same spot, 1 stinking vote behind new 25th place team Boise State.
